No New Offshore Drilling!

Trump wants to dramatically ramp up offshore oil drilling over the next five years. This is a blatant giveaway to the fossil fuel industry, and it puts our air, water, wildlife, and climate at risk.

The process of offshore oil drilling releases thousands of gallons of polluted water and waste into the ocean, which contains toxic substances such as benzene, zinc, arsenic, radioactive materials, and more. When a spill happens, it can ruin entire ecosystems, with impacts lasting for decades.

We should be winding down ocean drilling for oil, not ramping it up. Send your comment to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to oppose new offshore drilling leases.

I urge the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to abandon plans to increase offshore oil drilling over the next five years.  This is a blatant giveaway to the fossil fuel industry, and it puts our air, water, wildlife, and climate at risk.

The current draft of the Five-Year OCS Offshore Oil and Gas Leasing Plan is an extreme proposal that puts our nation’s coastal communities, beaches, surf breaks, and marine ecosystems at risk of a catastrophic oil spill.

Oil spills pose an extreme risk to our economy and environment, but the harm actually occurs long before a potential spill. Damage to the ocean and wildlife begins when oil companies start seismic blasting to find the best places to drill. The deafening noise created by the seismic airguns can harm whales, dolphins, and sea turtles and drive fish away.

Once the process of drilling begins, thousands of gallons of polluted water and waste are released into the ocean, which contains toxic substances such as benzene, zinc, arsenic, radioactive materials, and more.  High concentrations of metals have also been found around drilling platforms in the Gulf of Mexico and have been shown to accumulate in fish, mussels, and other seafood, contaminating our food supply.

Offshore drilling drives the climate crisis, while climate-fueled extreme weather events like tropical storms and hurricanes make spills more likely. Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita damaged a combined total of 113 platforms and spilled roughly 750,000 gallons of oil.

For these reasons, I urge the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to abandon any plans for new offshore drilling leases in the proposed Five-Year OCS Offshore Oil and Gas Leasing Plan.
