Congress: Oppose the Budget Bill!

The budget resolution moving through Congress threatens to give Congress broad powers over federal regulations and cut millions of families from food assistance, all to pay for tax cuts for billionaires and corporations.

This resolution, now through committee markups, will return to the floor for another vote as soon as THIS WEEK. We still have a chance to stop this draconian agenda from becoming law - but we need our Representatives to hear from us now!

As your constituent, I urge you to do everything in your power to block the extreme budget cuts that endanger safe food and clean water.

The House is moving forward on a budget reconciliation bill based on H.Con.Res. 14 that directs major cuts to basic services, such as Medicaid and SNAP food assistance, to help pay for $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, largely for billionaires and corporations.

I urge you to fight against the dangerous cuts that jeopardize access to safe food and water for millions of people.

Oppose any cuts to SNAP and other food assistance and safety programs:

The budget reconciliation bill proposes $300 billion in cuts from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. SNAP benefits help feed more than 40 million low-income people in the United States every year, providing an average of just $212 a month per person for food.

At a time when food prices continue to soar, do not raze to the ground programs designed to fight hunger for struggling families and children.

Oppose the requirement of congressional approval of all major regulations issued by federal agencies before they can go into effect:

The House budget reconciliation bill includes the REINS Act as a provision, which would seriously threaten our government’s ability to protect the public from harm and instead benefit corporations hoping to evade safety standards. It seeks to mandate that Congress approve all major regulations that increase revenue and eliminate existing regulations if they are not renewed and approved by Congress within five years, hampering the ability of agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency to protect our water and the Food and Drug Administration and the United States Department of Agriculture to ensure safe food.

Our country cannot afford budget cuts that erode access to safe food. I urge you to oppose any budget bill with extreme cuts that put safe food or clean water at risk.
