Governor Newsom: Shut Aliso Down!

It’s now been nearly two years since the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) mapped out possible timelines to shut down Aliso Canyon, site of the largest gas blowout in U.S. history. But the Commission has not moved to make this happen.

Instead, despite Governor Newom’s promises to shut Aliso down, the CPUC has repeatedly increased gas storage at Aliso Canyon and just released a preliminary decision that could leave the facility open indefinitely. Day after day, the community living near this dangerous facility is still suffering the aftermath of the largest methane gas blowout in United States history.

We need Governor Newsom to step up and keep his promise of expediting the closure of Aliso Canyon.

Take action before the CPUC finalizes plans for Aliso on December 19.

I urge you to protect the health and safety of Los Angeles residents by moving to finalize a timeline that would close Aliso Canyon by 2027.

Governor Newsom, you have repeatedly committed to closing Aliso Canyon, including expediting its closure faster than Governor Brown’s proposed closure date of 2027. In 2019, in a letter to the CPUC, you called for an even “shorter path to closure” of this dangerous facility.

It is critical that you and the CPUC decide now to shut Aliso down by 2027 at the latest and fulfill this commitment to Californians and particularly impacted residents of the San Fernando Valley.

Aliso Canyon is not needed to meet our energy needs. The state successfully adopted mitigation efforts after the blowout. For two years after the blowout, Aliso Canyon was under strict regulations and withdrawals were not permitted unless in the case of an emergency. During that time, the Southern California region did not face blackouts or gas supply shortages as a result of Aliso Canyon being offline.

Since the blowout, when withdrawals and activities at Aliso Canyon have ramped up, residents near the facility experience an uptick in symptoms. Aliso Canyon continues to pose an ongoing threat to community health. Rather than set closure of the facility by 2027, the CPUC is considering a plan that could keep Aliso Canyon open indefinitely.

Please protect the health and safety of Los Angeles residents by finalizing a timeline that would close Aliso Canyon by 2027.
